Officers of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF)’s southern area have begun work to drain streets in Addu city, which have been heavily flooded due to unceasing rain showers and swell waves in the region.
According to the MNDF, the flooding has been experienced due to the incessant rain showers that prevail across the nation. As such, roads adjoining districts of the city have been flooded which has led to transport issues.
MNDF confirmed that work to drain the roads have begun and officers are currently placing sandbags on the flooded roads. Moreover, swell waves also caused regions such as Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo to flood, with the water having reached some of the houses by the island’s reefs.
Maldives Meteorological Service had estimated bad weather to prevail across several regions over the nation for the next few days. As such, heavy rain and thunderstorms will be experienced over different regions of the nation for the next three days with strong gusts of wind and rough seas. MET department has cautioned the public especially seafarers to be cautious while travelling in central and southern atolls.
