Presidential Address 2017
Pres. refrained from speaking on corruption due to fear: Ameer

No renewed hopes from the Address

Presidential Address designed to deceive public

MDP Economic Committee Deputy Chair Ibrahim Ameer has stated that President Abdullah Yameen did not mention the issue of corruption in Monday’s Presidential Address as he feared exposure.

Speaking in RaajjeTV’s “Fala Suruhee” program, Ameer said that the Address was designed to deceive the public, without revealing the status of the nation. He noted that the Address failed to deliver hope to the public.

Ameer added that it was not surprising the President had not spoken of corruption as he was implicated in it, in spite of the concerns of the public over rising levels of corruption.

Clause 84 of the Constitution states that every year, at the start of the sessions for the year, the sitting President has to give his annual Address, focusing on the situation of the country and what needed to be done to rectify the issues.

Many analysts say that this year’s address had failed to note these issues.
