Former Attorney General Husnu Al Suood said that an income tax would reveal the bribes being placed into the bank accounts of judges and lawmakers.
The former AG said that he supports Joint Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s pledge to develop a system that would take tax from the richest citizens and reduce the inequality in the nation.
Suood said that an income tax will eliminate corruption and that only drug dealers and those involved in the black market would oppose such a system.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s government in 2011 announced that they would introduce an income tax. The bill in parliament proposed to take 3-15% from those with a monthly income of more than MVR 30,000. However, it was never implemented.
The current administration has stated that they would rather develop and expand the current tax system instead of imposing an income tax.
