The opposition’s “island nation” policy is not to drag Maldives back to the 1800s but to provide basic services to Maldivians from their own islands, says Joint Opposition presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s ‘Ibu’ (Solih’s nickname) show, he said that people should not have to go to specific places to receive services "in our digital age”.
Highlighting K. Maafushi as an example, Solih said that, as a naturally beautiful country, Maldives should make use of its resources.
He said that the Joint Opposition wants to develop a decentralized system in Maldives, since the country is an archipelago, and that people should be able to receive services in their native islands and be able to live there if they wish.
Solih added that government supporters have been misleading the public on the Joint Opposition’s policy by claiming that it would drag the nation back to the 19th century.
