No arrests made over death threat against MP Fahmy: Police

While it has been over 15 days since opposition lawmaker, Imthiyaz Fahmy received life-threatening messages via Viber, no arrests have been made.

A message, sent via Viber on February 24, said that the North-Maa ‘would be stabbed to death.’

In a post on Twitter, Fahmy revealed that he had received a message threatening his life from +960 9806306. He had tagged Maldives Police Service (MPS), Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

Media official at MPS told RaajjeMV on Sunday, that they have yet to make any arrests in the case, but that the investigation “is still ongoing.”

MPS, on February 25, said that the case had been filed with them, and officers 'consider it to be serious and of high priority.'

While, according to law, the security services of the State must ensure the protection and safety of all members of the parliament, it is unclear on whether they are being provided the protection.

Fahmy, a strong vocal critic of the current administration and ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s policies, recently criticized the police’s slow progress in investigating the threat issued against him. He repesents the largest opposition party in the country, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
