JP denies social media reports, says it is yet to select a running mate

JP's acting deputy leader denied this

Social media reports say that JP has selected Kendhoo constituency MP Ali Hussain as running mate

Jumhooree Party (JP) has said that it has yet to declare a running mate for the upcoming presidential elections.

After reports of JP selecting Kendhoo constituency MP Ali Hussain as Solih’s running mate, the party’s acting leader Hussain Rasheed Hassan stressed that its council “has not selected” anyone. He added that there have not been any “unofficial” decisions regarding the matter either.

The Joint Opposition has decided to select its presidential candidate from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and running mate from JP. While MDP has selected its parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the running mate race has been quite intense thus far with JP seemingly favoring its leader Qasim Ibrahim’s wife, Aishath Nahulaa for vice presidency.

However, Adhaalath Party- also part of the Joint Opposition- has come out and said that it will be “difficult” to accept a woman as a running mate.

RaajjeMV understands that JP’s senior members met on Saturday to discuss the matter, where they agreed on selecting a running mate that is “acceptable” to all parties in the opposition coalition. However, JP denied that any such meetings took place, but added that its leadership has been holding regular meetings since its congress last month.

While MDP has launched its presidential campaign with Solih, JP had previously said that his running mate will be announced on June 10.
