The opposition will strengthen its resolve and work harder towards keeping the nation from falling under tyranny, said former President and Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed said this on Tuesday, through a post on his official twitter account, stressing that representatives in the local councils are sitting in office beyond their tenures, given that the council elections have been postponed.

He further described recent charges against opposition officials involved in said elections, as "political sabotage".

A number of MDP members were arrested in Mathiveri Island of Alif Alif atoll, and Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq, who is contesting to stay in office for another tenure, along with his deputy were arrested on graft charges, allegedly revealed in a 2011 audit report.

Britain had granted Nasheed asylum, and he is currently in Sri Lanka, where he had held a national council meeting for members of the party; a number of senior MDP officials had traveled to Lanka to take part in the meetings as well. The former President also met with leaders of the opposition alliance while in Sri Lanka, and has been holding talks with foreign missions to Sri Lanka.
