Former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has criticized the decision to increase the salaries and allowances of the Speaker of Parliament and cabinet ministers, calling it a profound insult to the Maldivian people at a time when neither the Parliament nor the government has delivered any tangible results.
Expressing concern over the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee's decision on Wednesday to set the Speaker’s salary at MVR 95,000, allocate MVR 17,000 as a car allowance for ministers, and introduce significant changes to councilors' benefits, Fayyaz stated in a post on X that the Parliament has moved to increase the pay of ministers and the Speaker despite a lack of legislative productivity and the government’s failure to deliver results. He further remarked that he has never witnessed a Parliament of such low caliber.
Fayyaz questioned the timing of the move, describing it as a profound insult to the Maldivian people at a time when many are struggling due to rising inflation. He further questioned whether this was truly an urgent matter that could not have been deferred.
The government's decision to increase the salaries and allowances of high-ranking state officials has drawn sharp criticism from the public and political opposition. This backlash comes at a time when employees are being dismissed from state-owned enterprises and government institutions under the justification of a challenging economic climate.
