Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s campaign for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s primary campaign has been illustrious and shows the true extent of his resolve, says north-Maafannu constituency MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.
The longstanding opposition-aligned lawmaker was one of the speakers at the last event held by Nasheed’s campaign team, who use the opposition leader’s moniker ‘Island President’, in capital city Malé on Tuesday.
Fahmy said that such immense campaign bids will likely only be seen held by members of the opposition, and that nothing the government has done ‘even compares’. The lawmaker said Nasheed’s reputation of being trustworthy and compassionate has greatly helped his campaign efforts.
The parliamentarian said that Maldivians have ‘long tolerated’ government tactics that are unfair and biased towards those in power and Nasheed provides the chance for a similarly ‘trustworthy and compassionate’ form of rule.
MP Fahmy said this at Nasheed’s last campaign event before voting begins on Wednesday, at 02:00pm. Polling stations have been set up across the Maldives and in Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.
