Great savior complex over a faith already shielded by supreme law

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared that his administration will bring forth dedicated legislation designed to guarantee that no statutory measure violating the tenets of Islam can ever take root in the Maldives.

Addressing the official gathering for National Day held in HA. Utheemu on August 15, he conceded that while the Constitution itself explicitly forbids the creation of any statute repugnant to Islam, the nation presently suffers from the absence of an ironclad apparatus to secure that guarantee.

On that basis, he revealed his plan to table a measure before the People’s Majlis throughout the third parliamentary sitting of this year, with the aim of constructing an uncompromising systemic and principled structure to block the passage of any bill clashing with the holy Islamic faith.

The head of state openly concedes that the nation's foundational charter already outlaws the passage of non-compliant legislation.

However, his core contention rests on the claim that the country still lacks an effective practical framework to carry out this existing constitutional command.

Inventing a legal black hole in clear constitutional ink

The supreme law of the land is entirely too transparent on this subject to permit such misdirection. Under Article 10 of the Constitution, Islam is established as the official religion of the Maldivian state, while also being designated as a foundational basis for every single law across the territory. The identical constitutional provision goes on to explicitly bar the enactment of any statute that runs counter to any Islamic tenet whatsoever. This is hardly an obscure, trivial sentence buried away inside auxiliary bureaucratic guidelines; it stands as an unshakeable bedrock principle engraved into the supreme legal authority of the nation.

The constitutional safeguards do not stop at Article 10 either. Article 70 of the charter, which formally entrusts legislative authority to the People’s Majlis, mandates that the legislative body can exercise its powers solely in harmony with the doctrines of Islam, explicitly forbidding the chamber from ratifying any bill that breaches those principles.

The Maldives is fundamentally an Islamic state, with Islamic doctrines serving as the definitive foundation of all national jurisprudence. The People's Majlis is completely barred from approving any contrary measures, and the lawmaking authority bestowed upon parliament is strictly hemmed in by this explicit constitutional constraint.

Deflecting institutional dysfunction behind pious posturing

With these constitutional stipulations being unmistakably clear and considering that any viable mechanism must function within the boundaries of the Constitution itself, manufacturing the illusion of an institutional void on an issue so definitively settled can only be seen as an exercise in deceiving the public. It serves as an attempt to deploy faith as a convenient shield for manipulating the emotions of ordinary citizens.

If the administration’s underlying grievance is that the existing state bodies tasked with screening prospective legislation for religious alignment are falling short, that points entirely to an internal procedural or operational breakdown within those exact bodies. In simple terms, it represents a breakdown in executive management.

Under such circumstances, the executive branch is obligated to pinpoint precisely where the present apparatus has fallen short, detail what purported vacuum exists, and demonstrate how this incoming blueprint plans to fix it. If an actual vulnerability exists in enforcing Article 10, the authorities should lay it out in the open. If there is a procedural loophole, they should explain it clearly. If a particular institution has broken down in its responsibilities, the public deserves to know the exact entity involved and the precise nature of its breakdown.

Weaponizing faith to manufacture phantom crises

Failing to provide those answers only fosters a fabricated narrative across the electorate that without President Muizzu at the helm, some imaginary legal void would suddenly allow un-Islamic statutes to infiltrate the Maldivian judicial landscape.

Islam occupies the most revered and central role in Maldivian culture and within the constitutional text. Given this immense gravity, public officials must exercise far greater restraint when addressing religious matters. Faith should never be exploited to whip up non-existent anxieties regarding protections that are already comprehensively defended by the supreme law of the state.

The shielding of Islam within Maldivian jurisprudence certainly did not originate with the inauguration of this current government. Article 10 was not drafted after President Muizzu assumed the presidency. This foundational rule is not the personal possession of any sitting leader, nor is it a principle that requires repackaging under a fresh partisan banner.

Framing an entrenched constitutional guarantee as a crisis that demands the personal rescue of a single president is less about defending religious purity and far more about converting faith into political leverage while misleading the populace about existing legal realities.

Such theatrics must be brought to an end.

Uncomfortable litmus test of genuine religious conviction

Consequently, when the president stands before the public pledging a novel statutory tool to block un-Islamic enactments, it forces an obvious inquiry regarding what substantive legal protection is truly being introduced.

Is he prepared to show the resolve required to enforce capital punishment? Does he possess the fortitude to shut down revenue streams generated by the trade in alcoholic beverages and swine products? Is he willing to dismantle the various commercial banking and financial structures that facilitate interest and usury?

If the political appetite to address those realities is missing, remaining silent would be a far more dignified choice.
