Maldives has commended Brazil for its recent efforts to eradicate child labour and sexual harassment.

The Maldivian representative made these remarks at the Friday’s session of the ongoing 27th Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The Brazilian government began cracking down on child and forced labour in 2015, when it conducted over 7,263 inspections and prosecuted 53 for violation of child labour laws.

Children in Brazil are engaged in highly detrimental forms of child labor, including in the production of tobacco and in commercial sexual exploitation.

Brazilian lawmakers are yet to implement human trafficking laws to fight labour exploitation.

States under review this year are Algeria, Bahrain, Ecuador, Finland, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Netherlands, Philippines. Poland, South Africa, Tunisia, United Kingdom.

The UPR is a means of reviewing nations through the United Nations’ Human Rights Council.
