The Nilandhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the complete suspension of work on a new mosque, a project initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Nilandhoo Council member Ahmed Shafeeq stated that the Islamic Ministry's project was ongoing through the end of the previous administration and continued up until the recent local council elections.
He noted that by the time the administration changed, the majority of the masonry and plastering work had been completed, followed by progress on the mosque's upper decorative borders. However, Shafeeq stated that all work has now come to a complete standstill following the election.
While the mosque construction project was awarded to Mala Company, he noted a discrepancy between the government's and the contractor's explanations regarding the work stoppage. He stated that when the council met with the Ministry, they were informed that all necessary payments had been disbursed to the company. However, Shafeeq pointed out that when the company's employees on the island were questioned, they maintained that the work had ground to a halt due to non-payment.
Shafeeq stated that both the island's residents and the council have expressed deep concern over the project's suspension, emphasizing the need for an urgent solution to the prolonged delay.
