Decentralization Changes Could Bar Officials From Entering Islands: Shafiu

MDP Decentralization Committee member Shafeeq warned that the government's proposed amendments to the Decentralization Act would strip local councils of their authority over land, triggering significant public backlash. Describing the changes as a systematic dismantling of the decentralization framework, he cautioned that the resulting resentment could escalate to a point where government officials may face hostility and be unable to visit local islands.

Ahmed Shafeeq, a former member of the Special People’s Majlis and current member of the MDP’s Decentralization Committee, has warned that changes being introduced to the decentralized system by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration will eventually lead to a situation where government officials are barred from entering islands.

Appearing on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, Shafeeq expressed concern over the adverse impacts of the government's proposed amendments to the Decentralization Act, which would grant the central administration the authority to reclaim island lands.

Shafeeq stated that the current administration is dismantling the decentralization system and restricting the powers of the people. He warned that the changes proposed by the government would eventually lead to a day when government officials are barred from entering the islands.

Shafeeq stated that if the government continues to lean towards authoritarianism to the point where it loses public cooperation, it will face significant challenges in governing. He noted that history has shown instances where residents of various islands expressed their discontent and barred ministers and government officials from entering their communities. He further warned that if such patterns repeat, the public may even reach a point where they refuse to welcome the President to certain islands.

Furthermore, Shafeeq stated that it is a misconception to believe the government can simply enact a law to seize public land and utilize it however they please. He emphasized that such actions cannot be taken on a whim and noted that, as someone working within the decentralized governance sector, this is a matter of grave concern that requires serious reflection.

Highlighting the grave risks posed by the proposed amendment to the Decentralization Act, Shafeeq stated that the outcome of this change would be detrimental. The amendment seeks to grant the government the authority to reclaim lands and areas currently under the jurisdiction of local councils or cities for the purpose of state development projects.

I urge this administration to withdraw that bill immediately. This is simply not something that should be done. Proceeding with this will lead to severe consequences and misfortune for you. It is crystal clear that if these changes are implemented, government officials will no longer be able to set foot on the islands of this country.
Ahmed Shafeeq

Shafeeq stated that the public has embraced the decentralization system, noting that it has facilitated easier access to numerous services and fostered regional development. However, he warned that if the current administration resorts to tyranny and authoritarianism against the people, it is the government itself that will ultimately be weakened.
