The residents of F. Nilandhoo are facing significant hardships as the establishment of the island's sewerage system continues to stall. Due to the lack of adequate progress on the project, authorities are now forced to use bowsers daily to extract sewage from the streets.
In an interview with RaajjeTV regarding the issue, Nilandhoo Council Member Ahmed Shafeeq stated that they have been forced to work around the clock to clear sewage overflowing from the island's street junctions.
He noted that during periods of heavy rain and inclement weather, between 20 to 30 bowser loads of sewage must be disposed of daily. He further highlighted that this process causes significant disruptions to public transportation and pedestrian movement.
Nevertheless, Shafeeq highlighted the tireless efforts of the employees who continue to work diligently to alleviate the hardships faced by the public, even under these circumstances.
Furthermore, regarding the pump station being established on the island, Shafeeq stated that the project, contracted to MWSC, was originally scheduled for completion within 500 days. However, he noted that despite the deadline being approximately 100 days away, the work—which commenced close to the council elections—is progressing at a very slow pace.
Shafeeq noted that while work is currently underway on five pump stations under this project, none have been completed to date. He further stated that although work has not come to a complete standstill, the progress is significantly slow. Shafeeq expressed profound concern over the lack of a swift resolution, noting that the resulting hardships faced by the residents of Nilandhoo continue to be prolonged.
