MDP brings infringement of Hirimaradhoo residents' basic rights to HRCM's attention

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has brought the grievances of Hdh. Hirimaradhoo residents to the attention of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), following significant difficulties in accessing essential services after the dissolution of the island's council.

In this regard, the MDP’s Decentralization Committee met with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) on Sunday.

Ahmed Shafeeq, Chair of the MDP Decentralization Sub-committee, stated that the primary objective of the meeting was to bring the concerns regarding the dissolution of the HDh. Hirimaradhoo Council to the attention of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). He further noted that since President Muizzu's administration decided to dissolve the council and depopulate the island, the residents of Hirimaradhoo have been deprived of essential public services.

Shafeeq stated that the island currently has no appointed councilor or government representative.

Hirimaradhoo is currently without a local councillor or a state-appointed administrator. Consequently, residents are being deprived of essential public services.

Shafeeq stated that the government had pledged to construct 184 housing units in Hanimaadhoo for the residents of Hirimaradhoo. However, he expressed that hope is fading for the fulfillment of this promise.

Shafeeq also called on the government to provide the necessary care and assistance to the residents of Hirimaradhoo. He further noted that the community is currently in a state of despair.

With more than 300 residents currently living in Hirimaradhoo, the MDP has called for the reversal of President Muizzu's decree to depopulate the island.
