Nellaidhoo Water and Sewerage Project Completed

The scope of the project included the installation of RO plants, solar panels, and comprehensive water and sewerage networks; the final phase will involve the official handover of the system to the designated operator.

The physical works for the water and sewerage system project in HDh. Nellaidhoo, initiated during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, have been completed and officially commissioned.
The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development has announced the completion of the water and sewerage project in Nellaidhoo. Following the conclusion of physical works, the system was successfully tested and commissioned on August 11, 2024.
This project was funded through a loan from the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) alongside contributions from the state budget. The contract for the project was awarded during the previous administration to a joint venture between Altec Maldives Private Limited and Rasheed Carpentry and Construction (RCC) Private Limited.
In addition to the Ministry's technical staff, the project contractor, Fenaka Corporation, and the Nellaidhoo Island Council actively participated in the testing and commissioning of the system.

Awarded on May 6, 2026, this project involved the construction of an RO plant facility in Nellaidhoo, featuring office space and a modern laboratory equipped for water quality testing. To ensure environmentally sustainable operations, a 21-kilowatt solar panel system was also installed on the building. The water system infrastructure includes two boreholes and two RO plants capable of producing 35 tons of water per day. Additionally, storage capacity was established through two 200-ton tanks for potable water and a 200-ton tank for rainwater harvesting.
Furthermore, an 8.8-kilometer water distribution network has been installed to provide water across various areas of the island. According to the Ministry, the sewerage system includes a 7.5-kilometer network, two pumping stations, and a dedicated sewage treatment plant.
The Ministry stated that under this project, the installation of the sea outfall system, the placement of catch pits in households and other buildings, and the installation of water meters have all been completed.
The Ministry stated that all physical works for the project have been completed and system testing has been finalized. The next phase will involve officially handing over the system to the operator for commencement of operations.
