No Progress on Fulhadhoo Water Supply Project Since Current Government Took Office

The Fulhadhoo Island Council has expressed concern over the suspension of the island's water system project, which was initiated during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration but has remained stalled since the current government took office.

Expressing concern over the situation, Fulhadhoo Council Member Hassan Abdullah told RaajjeTV that the establishment of the island's water system was a high-priority project initiated by the previous administration in 2023. However, Hassan noted that work has come to a complete standstill since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.

Hassan stated that by the end of President Solih’s administration, 90 percent of the building's construction had been completed. He noted that all necessary materials—including gravel, sand, bricks, road piping, and timber for ceiling work—had already been procured and brought to the site at that time.

Hassan stated that these items, purchased with public funds, have now been left to deteriorate. He further noted that despite inquiring with the government as to why the council has not proceeded with the work, no response has been received.

Hassan stated that although the project was initially awarded to Fenaka by the previous administration, it was transferred to MWSC following the change in government. He further noted that no progress has been made on the project since that transfer.

MWSC claims that the pipes and materials previously brought in are of substandard quality and will not be used. They have stated that they intend to procure entirely new equipment. However, is this not a blatant waste of resources? Even now, there are tanks and structures where construction had already commenced under the previous administration, with the steel frames and materials still lying exactly where they were laid out.

Hassan stated that when President Muizzu visited the island in 2025, construction materials and personnel were brought in to commence the project. However, he noted that as soon as the President departed, both the workers and the supplies were removed from the site. Hassan further highlighted that the President had previously assured them he would personally oversee the progress of this project.

Hassan stated that when he contacted an MWSC employee for an update on the project, he was informed that the work has stalled due to a lack of budget.

Furthermore, Hassan expressed concern over the negligence regarding construction materials brought to the site, noting that silicone bottles, pipes, timber, cement, and aggregates have been left exposed to the elements to deteriorate.
