The former President of the Dhaalu Meedhoo Island Council, Mohamed Shahid, has stated that the island's newly developed volleyball court has become unusable during rainy periods due to flooding, a result of the project being rushed to completion.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Shahid stated that the Meedhoo volleyball court development project was a government initiative carried out by RDC employees stationed on the island specifically to coincide with the local elections. He further alleged that the project was rushed through day and night to ensure its completion ahead of a visit by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. Shahid claimed this was a calculated move to have her inaugurate the facility and gain an unfair advantage in the elections.
Furthermore, Shahid noted that many local experts had expressed concerns at the time, warning that the volleyball court's foundation was constructed lower than the surrounding ground level, which would lead to flooding during the rainy season. However, he stated that those in charge of the project completely disregarded these warnings.
Shahid stated that the decision to complete the project while disregarding the advice provided by technical experts at the time has resulted in the area flooding every time it rains, causing extensive damage and rendering the site unusable. Furthermore, Shahid expressed concern that the court could deteriorate to the point of becoming permanently beyond repair in the near future.
The court was officially inaugurated by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on February 12, 2026.
