A council member belonging to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has obstructed and used police intervention to halt the screening of RaajjeTV’s "Haalu Kihineh?" program on a large screen in Dh. Meedhoo. The Council President, who was elected on a PNC ticket, ordered the stoppage claiming that broadcasting the program would disrupt public peace.
A group of individuals worked tirelessly to finalize all necessary arrangements, sourcing electricity from various locations to ensure the program could be broadcast.
According to local residents familiar with the matter, PNC member Suha Ibrahim, who was recently elected to the Meedhoo Council, intervened to stop the program just as preparations for the broadcast were being finalized, informing organizers that the show could not proceed at the venue.
RaajjeMV has obtained audio recordings of Suha demanding an end to the activities to prevent further disruption of public order. In the recordings, Suha stated that the activities must cease immediately to maintain peace, asserting that continuing them would constitute a deliberate attempt to undermine stability.
According to local sources, the council later intervened by deploying police officers to halt the activities. The officers who arrived at the scene further instructed individuals to act in a manner that does not obstruct them from carrying out their duties.
Notably, while the program was being filmed in Meedhoo, a group affiliated with the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) gathered at the location and instigated a confrontation. Footage of these disturbances is included in the program.
During the unrest, the crowd gathered in the area used foul language and attempted to damage expensive equipment, including RaajjeTV's cameras. Many are describing these actions as a direct attempt to obstruct the freedom of the press.
RaajjeTV’s program "Haalu Kihineh?" is a platform designed to allow citizens to voice their concerns regarding the current state of their islands and the various government projects that have been initiated but currently remain stalled.
Notably, several government projects in Dh. Meedhoo have currently come to a standstill. It is believed that the attempt to obstruct this program was motivated by concerns that residents might voice their growing dissatisfaction over the halted development projects on the island.
