Mohamed Shahid, the former President of the Dh. Meedhoo Island Council, has expressed concern over the suspension of the island's road construction project after work had already commenced.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, he criticized the government over the continued suspension of the project.
Shahid noted that during the presidential election campaign, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged to the residents of Meedhoo that key roads on the island would be paved with asphalt and upgraded. He further stated that the President had committed to organizing the road network to connect with the island's reclaimed area, ensuring ease of access for those relocating to the newly developed land.
However, Shahid noted that as the administration approaches its three-year mark, only a few junctions have been installed on the streets, with no further progress made on the project. He further alleged that these junctions were placed solely as a tactic to secure votes ahead of the recent local council elections.
Shahid stated that the work was carried out with extreme haste and without the involvement of technical experts. He further noted that, as a result, future road construction will require removing those junctions and re-leveling them.
Furthermore, Shahid stated that although the Road Development Corporation has hired a sufficient number of employees, the current administration lacks the vision and capability to organize and finalize projects. He added that this issue is not unique to Meedhoo, noting that road construction projects across various other islands have also come to a standstill after initial excavation work.
