The former President of the Meedhoo Island Council, Mohamed Shahid, has expressed concern over the current administration's failure to complete the breakwater construction for the Dhaalu Atoll Meedhoo harbor project—a project that was largely finished during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
Expressing his concern in an interview with RaajjeTV, Shahid stated that the Meedhoo harbor project was initiated during President Solih's administration. He noted that by the end of that term, the only remaining task was the construction of the harbor's outer breakwater.
Shahid stated that the construction of the outer seawall commenced during the local council elections and noted that the project remains incomplete to this day.
Whenever a group of people or government officials visit the area, an excavator is brought in to place a few stones before leaving again. It seems as though they either run out of fuel or encounter some unknown issue every time. The question remains: why has this project come to a standstill?Mohamed Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid asserted that the current administration lacks a developmental vision, claiming they are incapable of initiating new projects or completing ongoing ones, and are merely interfering with the work established by others.
The Dh. Meedhoo harbor development project encompasses extensive dredging operations and the construction of a 373-meter breakwater, a 35-meter revetment, and a 294-meter quay wall. Additionally, the project includes the installation of an 11-meter by 11-meter ramp, the paving of a 1,470-square-meter area, and the installation of both channel and harbor lighting.
The project site was mobilized to commence physical works on April 27, 2021.
