The former President of the Meedhoo Island Council, Mohamed Shahid, has stated that the development of the local swimming area in Dhaalu Meedhoo is not progressing at an acceptable pace. He further alleged that the heavy machinery currently stationed at the site was only mobilized following reports that a RaajjeTV news team was arriving on the island to cover the project.
In an interview with RaajjeTV, Shahid stated that the development of the area began during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, with the aim of providing a high-quality swimming spot for the public. He further noted that as the project remained unfinished at the end of the previous term, the current administration had pledged to expedite its completion in time for the council elections held on April 4. He added that the government had promised the public the facility would be developed to the highest standards seen across the Maldivian islands.
Shahid stated that work in the area has failed to gain momentum following the election. He further noted that unproductive activities are taking place without any professional consultation, such as bringing in excavators to fill areas that were dug just the day before, or removing rocks immediately after they had been laid.
Whenever an issue arises, an excavator is brought to this site. They rattle its metal parts just enough for the public to notice, and then it leaves again. The machinery vanishes, breaks down, or simply runs out of fuel.Mohamed Shahid
Furthermore, Shahid stated that the excavator was once again brought to the site specifically following reports that a RaajjeTV team was traveling to the island to gather information.
Shahid stated that this is not an isolated incident occurring only in that island, but rather a reflection of how the current administration's policies are being implemented across all islands throughout the Maldives.
He emphasized that this is a crucial factor for the public to consider in the upcoming presidential election.
