The Maldives Police Service has stated that government agencies are being subjected to repeated and ongoing cyberattacks.
Police announced on Tuesday that the Cyber Security Operations Centre (CSOC) of the Maldives Police Service has identified a series of malicious phishing emails targeting government agencies and institutions.
Consequently, the police have appealed to both government institutions and the general public to accord this matter special attention.
According to the police, these deceptive emails are designed to appear as authentic communications from trusted official institutions or known contacts. Attackers disguise malicious links and attachments within these emails, presenting them as official invitations, documents, or file-sharing links to mislead recipients.
Police have warned that accessing such malicious links or opening suspicious files significantly increases the risk of hackers obtaining sensitive information, including usernames and passwords. Furthermore, authorities noted that such breaches could facilitate unauthorized access to institutional computer systems and networks, ultimately leading to full system compromises.
Based on the tactics and tools employed in these incidents, the Cyber Crime Centre (C3) assesses that these activities appear to be part of a coordinated and targeted campaign. In response, the police cybercrime unit is closely monitoring these developments.
Police stated that they are working in coordination with relevant government agencies to share information necessary for protection against these attacks and are taking measures to block malicious websites and networks.
Furthermore, police have stated that the investigation and technical analysis into the matter are currently ongoing.
Police have stated that public vigilance and awareness are the primary defenses against such attacks, emphasizing that adhering to these safety measures is the most crucial step in protecting against cyber threats.
