The Maldives Police Service has closed a case involving social media threats to storm RaajjeTV and "mob" its staff, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. The decision to file the case comes one year and nine months after the investigation began.
A social media group operating under the name "PNC - Cyber Troops" issued threats against RaajjeTV while the station was providing live coverage of a major opposition rally held in Male' on the night of December 10, 2024. At approximately 19:36 that evening, an account using the handle "Zarra" posted a message calling for an intrusion into the RaajjeTV station and inciting mob violence against its staff. RaajjeTV formally submitted a complaint regarding the matter to the police on December 11, 2024.
In a letter sent to RaajjeTV on Sunday, the police stated that the case submitted by the station has been filed. The authorities noted that the investigation has thus far failed to yield sufficient evidence or testimony to substantiate the alleged crime.
Furthermore, the police have closed a case involving death threats made against RaajjeTV’s Broadcast Visual Director Amir Saleem, without taking any action. The incident occurred during a protest outside the People’s Majlis on September 9, 2025, after journalists were removed from a committee meeting held behind closed doors to review the "Media Control Bill." On that day, a Facebook account under the name "Ruksha Razzaq" posted a photo of Amir Saleem speaking at the protest, accompanied by an explicit threat stating, "This man must be given the death penalty."
Although the case was reported to the police on September 15, 2025, it remained without updates for 11 months. It was only on August 24, 2026, that the Investigating Officer (IO), Sajid, informed Aamir that the case had been filed away, citing a lack of information from Facebook. Just one day after being notified that the investigation had been closed, Aamir Saleem received another dangerous threat.
On August 25, 2026, after Raajje TV received information from a credible source, a similar claim was posted alongside a photo by "Hassan Kurusee," a prominent anonymous account on the social media platform X. The post alleged that the ruling PNC had paid individuals to carry out attacks against Raajje TV’s Amir Saleem and MDP Member of Parliament Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu). The post further noted that while the specific motive behind the planned attacks remained unclear and there was no evidence of any provocative statements made by either individual, both Amir and Kudu had been alerted to the threat. Raajje TV reported the matter to the police; however, to date, no updates or details regarding the investigation have been provided to either the station or Amir Saleem.
Furthermore, when a RaajjeTV team operating in D. Meedhoo last Friday attempted to report an attempted assault and harassment against them, the police refused to accept the case, instructing them instead to return during official working hours on a business day. It is deeply concerning to witness such conduct from the Maldives Police Service, especially regarding serious matters, given that the institution is mandated to provide 24-hour service.
