A glaring illustration of this double standard unfolded recently during the production of the broadcast "Haalu Kihineh?" on the island of Meedhoo in Dhaalu atoll, produced by privately-run television station RaajjeTV.

The well-known show travels the country to capture the real-world circumstances of everyday Maldivians while shedding light on the true status of state-backed infrastructure works.

Naturally, featured residents frequently take the opportunity to air their grievances and describe the distress inflicted upon them by the reigning regime’s governing choices and actions.

Mayhem in Meedhoo

The chaos that erupted on a Friday afternoon right in the middle of an on-camera discussion stood out as both deplorable and thoroughly crude.

Headed by the maternal relative of First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, an individual named Abdulla Latheef, a faction of People’s National Congress (PNC) loyalists stormed the filming location in a bid to physically strike both the television production unit and the neighborhood onlookers gathered around. Throughout this deliberate harassment, Amir Saleem, who oversees programming at the network, maintained his self-control and stayed seated beside the local being interviewed. Even though he declined to take the bait when showered with insults, the assembled partisans kept bellowing vulgarity, shattering public order, and deliberately manufacturing a climate of dread.

The assault did not end with verbal threats, as deliberate efforts were made to wreck the technical gear used for the broadcast. Former Meedhoo Council Vice President Ali Shareef reportedly rammed a motorbike directly into the seat occupied by the videographer, specifically hunting to smash the recording apparatus to pieces.

Weaponized power and the myth of state civility

While the head of state constantly preaches the virtues of national solidarity and communal politeness, having his own spouse’s relatives indulge in aggressive, primitive outbursts makes a mockery of the official line.

Delivering factual accounts to everyday viewers cannot be treated as a trigger for physical assault and intimidation tactics. When merely broadcasting genuine on-the-ground truths invites street-level battery and relentless terrorization, it marks a deeply perilous chapter for the entire country.

Witnessing brutal antics surface from the inner circle of the First Lady constitutes a pressing public danger. Operating with total impunity under the protective wing of state leverage is intolerable. Even when indisputable visual recordings capture every detail of the confrontation, this executive establishment is bound to issue outright dismissals.

Such expected pushback is simply the byproduct of a regime culture where warping evident facts is done shamelessly and openly, an outcome that no longer shocks anyone in the populace.

Starting the crusade at the family dinner table

Rather than resorting to heavy-handed muscle and flat rejections, real social consideration can only take root when justice and honest exposure are permitted to breathe.

Resorting to vigilantism and sabotaging property or people merely over differing political stripes cannot be excused under any circumstances. These ugly episodes lay bare that while the public is subjected to nationwide tutorials on courtesy, figures tied directly to the governing elite and their home territories are busy displaying gutless, crude aggression.

Across numerous public appearances, the chief executive has lamented that rival factions and news organizations are showing little enthusiasm for rallying behind his manners drive. However, before demanding that external critics and reporters jump on board, the incumbent ought to draft his own household into this moral crusade so they can demonstrate the standard first.

Dignity must move beyond cheap vocabulary; it demands tangible conduct if society is ever going to reform. The chief magistrate stays occupied in hyping up a nationwide gentility movement while the relatives of his wife are accused of dishing out violence.

Where is the consistency in that?

Basic civility will never be forged through podium pontificating and state-sponsored catchphrases; it starts by disciplining the actions of our rulers and the relatives sitting under their own roofs.
