Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that no previous Maldivian leader has felt the need to publicly declare they are neither hypocrites nor liars. He suggested that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent remarks to that effect only serve to expose his own deep-seated insecurities.
Speaking at the People's National Front (PNF) front office meeting on Thursday night, former President Yameen stated that President Muizzu is not the first person to lead the Maldives, noting that many leaders have governed the country before him. President Yameen remarked that he has never seen any other leader take to a podium to personally declare, "I am not a hypocrite, I am not a liar, and I will fulfill my promises." He further asserted that such statements only serve to expose President Muizzu’s inner insecurities and his duplicitous nature.
Furthermore, President Yameen stated that President Muizzu’s rhetoric and perceived superficiality are exposing his true underlying motives to the public, suggesting that it is divine will that these realities are being brought to light.
Speaking at the gathering, President Yameen heavily criticized the Muizzu administration's religious policies and rhetoric. He questioned whether the Islamic fabric and faith of a nation are strengthened merely by increasing the number of religious slogans and plaques, or by the leader simply speaking on such matters. President Yameen further questioned whether these numerous plaques would address issues such as the presence or use of 'L-shaped sofas' within the President's Office.
The public never expected that a person assuming the presidency would lie to them, let alone persist in a cycle of deceit. It was unthinkable that a leader would betray the people or act against the national interest. Yet, no other president has felt the need to publicly proclaim that they would not lie or that they are not a hypocrite. This behavior suggests deep-seated issues; even through his attempts at pretense, his true nature is being revealed. Furthermore, President Yameen stated that a president should not have to repeatedly insist that they are not lying when addressing the public, adding that an individual who resorts to falsehoods is unfit to remain in office.
Referring to remarks made by senior government officials and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla at the PNC Congress, former President Yameen noted that even as Abdul Raheem concluded a recent gathering, he directed all his gratitude toward him. President Yameen further remarked that he appears to be a constant presence even in their dreams. He added that, by the will of God, the internal truths and realities of those currently in power are now beginning to be revealed through their own words.
