The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is providing emergency assistance following severe weather across the Maldives, which caused property damage in Addu City and tidal flooding in Dhaalu Rinbudhoo and Laamu Isdhoo. Amidst several dangerous maritime incidents reported during this monsoon surge, the Meteorological Service forecasts that weather conditions will begin to improve starting Sunday.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported that several regions across the country have sustained damages due to strong winds and tidal surges caused by the ongoing severe weather conditions in the Maldives.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that two houses in Feydhoo, Addu City, sustained varying degrees of damage during a storm on Friday night. The incidents included a portion of a roof being blown off one residence and a breadfruit tree falling onto the kitchen roof of another.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that it is providing necessary assistance to those affected by these incidents. The authority noted that while roof repairs are currently underway with the support of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), efforts are also being made through the local council to identify and provide further essential aid to the impacted families.

Furthermore, the authority reported that tidal surges affected Rinbudhoo in Dhaalu Atoll and Isdhoo in Laamu Atoll on Friday. In response to unusually high swells in parts of Rinbudhoo, local institutions and residents collaborated to stack sandbags to mitigate damage to homes and streets. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also confirmed that the harbor area of Laamu Isdhoo experienced the impact of the tidal surges.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has stated that the current spell of bad weather across the country is expected to subside starting Sunday.

Abdulla Hafiz, a meteorologist at the office, told RaajjeTV that the current spell of bad weather across the Maldives is expected to subside starting Saturday afternoon. However, he noted that the weather is likely to begin clearing up fully from Sunday onwards.

Hafiz stated that the current weather conditions are not limited to the Maldives, noting that various regions across South Asia, particularly neighboring India and Sri Lanka, are also being affected. He highlighted that southern parts of India, in particular, are expected to experience significant rainfall. He further explained that the ongoing stormy weather across the Maldives is being driven by wind convergence in the region.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has urged caution during sea travel due to severe weather conditions, as several dangerous incidents have already been reported. In one such instance, a landing craft that departed from K. Thilafushi took on water and sank. Additionally, a safari vessel anchored off the coast of K. Maafushi drifted after its anchor line snapped, subsequently crashing into the island's breakwater and being completely destroyed.
