The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a fatal accident in Hulhumalé Phase II that claimed the life of nine-year-old Zeeva Sinan Ahmed, of M. Lemontree.
The incident occurred at approximately 21:04 on the night of August 29, 2026, near Vinares Tower 7 on Hithigas Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II.
According to information shared with the media by the police, the accident occurred when the driver of a car parked on the side of the road attempted to cross the street to enter the vehicle. At that moment, a motorcycle attempting to overtake the car struck the driver, causing the motorcycle to crash into the right-hand lane.
According to the police, preliminary findings from video footage and an analysis of the accident scene suggest that a car traveling in the same lane was unable to stop in time after the motorcycle crashed. Investigators believe the vehicle subsequently struck or ran over the 9-year-old child who had fallen from the motorcycle. Forensic examinations are currently being conducted as part of the ongoing investigation to confirm these details.
The child injured in the accident passed away in the early hours of September 1, 2026, while undergoing treatment at IGM Hospital.
In connection with this case, the three vehicles involved in the accident have been towed, and the licenses of all three drivers have been suspended.
Furthermore, Police have fined and taken action against the driver of the stationary car, as it was discovered he was operating the vehicle while his license was already under suspension.
