A foreign national is in critical condition and currently on ventilator support following a dangerous fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion at M.A. Dhoogas in Malé City, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has confirmed.
Authorities received reports of the fire at approximately 5:27 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026. The incident occurred in a five-bedroom apartment housing 15 residents, and four expatriates were transported to the hospital for further medical treatment following injuries sustained in the blaze.
An IGMH media official told RaajjeMV that two individuals have been discharged after receiving treatment. The official further stated that while two others were initially admitted to the ICU in serious condition, one has since been moved to a general ward. The other remains in critical condition and is currently being treated on a ventilator.
The official has not disclosed the nationalities of the individuals involved, nor have they provided specific details regarding the extent of their injuries.
As a safety precaution following the incident, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided temporary shelter and assistance to a total of 41 individuals, including residents from the adjacent building.
