Dr. Fazna, first Maldivian doctor to specialize in child development disorders, passes away
The passing of Dr. Fazna, who pioneered the introduction of diagnostic assessments for autism and ADHD in the Maldives, represents a profound loss for the nation's healthcare sector.

Dr. Aminath Fazna, the first Maldivian physician to specialize in child development disorders, has passed away while undergoing treatment for cancer.
According to reports, Dr. Fazna passed away in Male' on Thursday while undergoing treatment for cancer. She had been admitted to IGMH for medical care for several days prior to her passing.
Dr. Fazna was a dedicated professional who rendered invaluable service to the Maldivian healthcare sector. After completing her MBBS, she joined the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in 2018. In 2021, Dr. Fazna pursued two years of specialized higher education at the National University of Malaysia.
Subsequently, she completed specialized training as a developmental pediatrician, focusing on the diagnosis of conditions such as autism, at the University of California. After completing her studies in this field, she rejoined IGMH and resumed clinical practice earlier this year.
Dr. Fazna is the first Maldivian doctor to specialize in the diagnosis of autism. She has performed exemplary work in supporting children by introducing specialized assessments to identify autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities.
The funeral prayer for Dr. Fazna is scheduled to be held at the Aa-Sahara Mosque in Male' following the Isha prayer on Thursday night. Many have noted that Dr. Fazna’s passing is a profound loss for the Maldivian healthcare sector, particularly for the families of children with disabilities.
