During Muizzu's tenure as Mayor, over MVR 60 million was spent on procurement of plants: Mayor Azim

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has stated that City Council records reveal over MVR 60 million was spent on the procurement of plants during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's tenure as Mayor.

Speaking at the 11th official general meeting of the Male' City Council's fifth term, Mayor Azim stated that the only visible result of the funds allocated for tree planting is the row of date palms on one side of the city. He further urged that the former mayor be questioned regarding how those funds were spent.

Mayor Azim stated that investigations are currently underway into unaccounted-for activities conducted by the Male' City Council during its previous term. He further noted that ongoing inquiries into land-related issues have resulted in a temporary standstill of certain operations.

Azim stated that efforts are currently underway to build capacity and ensure the effective utilization of funds received by the council. Furthermore, Azim noted that there has never been a time when public issues have been discussed as extensively as they are now.

In my view, efforts are underway to ensure that available funds are utilized effectively, alongside extensive initiatives to build local capacity.

At the same time, he requested the full cooperation of both the public and the government with the Male' City Council. Mayor Azim also called for an end to the various obstructions being posed by the government.

Despite securing a second term in the elections held this April, Mayor Azim has previously voiced concerns that the government is obstructing efforts to develop Male' City.
