President Muizzu has yet to contact the families of the missing soldier and police officer to express his condolences

Highlighting a perceived lack of cooperation from senior government officials, the family of Nafiu questioned whether this apparent negligence is a result of their humble social standing.

The families of missing Police Sergeant Ali Nafiu and MNDF Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Ahmed have stated that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has yet to contact them to offer his sympathies, four days after the two officers went missing at sea.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:37 PM on the night of August 5, 2026. However, the family noted that President Muizzu has yet to issue a statement regarding the matter.
A family member of the missing Police Sergeant Nafiu told RaajjeMV that while no senior government officials have reached out, Azim Abdul Azeez, the PNC Member of Parliament for the Vilingili constituency, sent a message to Nafiu’s wife, Yumna Junaid. According to the family member, the MP expressed his condolences during this difficult time and assured her that he is in ongoing discussions with the relevant authorities regarding the matter.
In her response to the message, Yumna stated that Nafiu was her entire life and pleaded for his return by any means necessary, according to a family member. The family also questioned whether the President’s lack of response was due to their humble background.
The message I wish to convey to the President is this: Is it because he is not a foreigner? Is it because he is not the child of a high-ranking Ministry official? Is the President remaining this silent simply because it is a person from an underprivileged family who has gone missing?A family member
Furthermore, RaajjeMV has confirmed that the family of missing MNDF Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Ahmed has not received any message or phone call from President Muizzu. However, the Chief of Defence Force, Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, has contacted the family.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the family of Mohamed Hamdhoon, the captain of the vessel from Th. Madifushi who remains missing following the incident, have been unsuccessful.
