Muizzu to Propose System Preventing Laws Contrary to Islamic Principles

15 އޯގަސްޓު 2026 | ހޮނިހިރު 09:27

President Muizzu has announced that a bill will be submitted during the third session of Parliament this year to establish a robust legal framework ensuring that no laws contrary to Islamic principles can be enacted in the Maldives. Speaking at the National Day ceremony, the President noted that while the Constitution already prohibits such laws, the country has lacked a formal systemic mechanism to effectively guarantee this protection until now.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has provided full assurance that he will submit a proposal to the People’s Majlis to establish a robust legal and systemic framework. This initiative aims to ensure that no laws contradicting or inconsistent with the principles of the holy religion of Islam can be enacted in the Maldives.

President Muizzu made these remarks while officiating the official ceremony held on Saturday to mark the National Day.

In his address, the President highlighted the profound connection between the historical events of National Day and the holy tenets of Islam. He emphasized that the independence of the Maldives is inextricably linked to the Islamic faith. The President further noted that whenever policies alien to or distant from Islamic principles have been implemented, the nation’s sovereignty has either been lost or pushed to the brink of peril.

President Muizzu stated that a robust national framework must be established to ensure the protection of Islam within the country.

President Muizzu stated that although the Constitution of the Maldives explicitly mandates that no law shall be enacted that contradicts the tenets of Islam, and that all laws, principles, and regulations must remain within the boundaries of the faith, a robust systemic framework to ensure this compliance does not yet exist. He further expressed his commitment to addressing this gap and establishing a definitive mechanism to rectify the situation.

According to the Constitution of the Maldives, no law can be enacted in the country that contradicts the principles of Islam. All laws, regulations, and policies formulated in the Maldives must remain within the tenets and boundaries of the holy religion of Islam. This is how the matter is formally documented. The question, however, is whether a robust system exists to ensure this is upheld. Is there a cohesive institutional framework within our procedures to guarantee this? The answer is very simple: No.
President Muizzu

President Muizzu has announced that a legislative framework will be submitted during the third session of Parliament this year to ensure that no laws contradicting the principles of Islam can be enacted. The President further assured all Maldivian citizens of his full commitment to establishing this system.
