Small-scale projects managed directly by government instead of being handed over to local councils are ending in failure: Nimal

Former Meemu Atoll Council President Nimal has stated that small-scale government projects conducted without local council involvement often face delays and poor quality, leading to ineffective outcomes. Calling for such tasks to be mandated to local councils, he urged the central government to instead prioritize large-scale infrastructure initiatives such as harbor development and housing projects.

Former President of the Meemu Atoll Council, Mohamed Nimal, has stated that small-scale projects managed directly by the government instead of being handed over to local councils are ending in failure.

Speaking on Sunday's "Fashaairu" program, Nimal stated that, unlike the previous administration, this government aims to execute small-scale projects rather than delegating them to local councils. He noted that the previous approach had failed to yield results, necessitating a complete restart of those efforts.

He noted that projects such as volleyball and bashi courts are being undertaken, but these initiatives are facing significant delays and remain unfinished. Nimal highlighted that while the government carries out the construction of futsal grounds or volleyball courts, local councils are given no say in the process. He further stated that they are unable to monitor whether projects are progressing correctly, as the Ministry of Youth fails to share relevant information with them.

Nimal stated that local councils possess the necessary capacity to manage smaller projects, such as the development of volleyball courts and fitness centers, and emphasized that such initiatives should be mandated to them.

When the central government attempts to manage small-scale projects, they often fail to materialize. However, over the past five years, we have seen that the majority of initiatives and projects spearheaded by local councils have been successfully completed. We have witnessed firsthand how councils closely monitor these projects to ensure they are effectively implemented.

Furthermore, Nimal stated that the execution of small-scale projects has been a complete failure, necessitating a total overhaul of the work. He further noted that although the construction of the waste management facility in Mulah was completed just last year, the building's roofing sheets have already corroded and now require full replacement.

Governments should focus on executing large-scale initiatives, he stated, while calling on the administration to undertake major harbor development and housing projects.
