Suspect in drug smuggling case: Defense claims individual is autistic and requests a formal assessment of their condition
The Criminal Court has remanded Raaif, a suspect arrested for smuggling drugs into the Maldives, for 30 days. While the court noted that sufficient evidence had been presented to support the allegations, it also ordered the police to facilitate a mental health assessment for the suspect after his defense highlighted that he is autistic.

The defense has informed the court that an individual accused of smuggling narcotics into the Maldives is autistic and has been receiving treatment since childhood, requesting a current psychological evaluation to determine his mental state.
Abdulla Raaif, a 30-year-old native of L. Kalaidhoo, has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling narcotics into the Maldives. Following his arrest on the 9th of this month, the court has ordered him to be remanded in custody for a period of 30 days.
According to the order issued by the Criminal Court, police have submitted sufficient evidence to establish reasonable suspicion that the individual committed the alleged crime.
The evidence submitted includes the Customs complaint form, intelligence reports, statements from the responding police officers and witnesses, and crime scene officer reports. Furthermore, the court order states that his urine analysis report tested positive for cannabis, a controlled substance.
Court records further indicate that the individual has a prior history of arrests and criminal detention.
Police noted that searches of additional premises linked to Raaif in connection with this case led to the discovery of more narcotics. Authorities further highlighted evidence linking him to the seized items and indicated that these activities were carried out in collaboration with other individuals.
However, the defense argued in court that the individual is autistic and has been receiving treatment since childhood, emphasizing the need for a psychological assessment to determine his current mental state. Noting that these requirements had not yet been met, the court instructed the Maldives Police Service to review the assessment process and provide the necessary support and accommodations during the investigation.
