Amidst the ongoing measles outbreak in the Maldives, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has evaded questions in the People's Majlis regarding reports that the country has run out of measles testing kits.
During Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, the Member of Parliament for the Vaikaradhoo constituency, Hussain Ziyad, raised a formal inquiry regarding the recent surge in measles cases. MP Ziyad noted that there is significant public concern that the unusual spread of the disease in the Maldives was caused by a shortage of diagnostic test kits. He requested clarification on the facts of the situation and asked the government to confirm whether the supply of testing kits had indeed been exhausted.
Instead of providing a direct answer to the member's inquiry, Geela stated that she had attended the session prepared to address specific questions submitted in advance. Declining to answer the additional questions posed by MP Ziyad, Geela concluded her remarks with a very brief statement.
I have come here today specifically to provide answers to your questions. Therefore, thank you very much, Honorable Speaker.Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali
