Questions Persist Over Measles Test Kit Availability

Health Minister Geela Ali has evaded direct questions in Parliament regarding public complaints over the shortage of measles testing kits amidst an ongoing outbreak in the Maldives. The Minister declined to provide a specific response, stating she had attended the session prepared only for previously submitted inquiries. Despite mounting public anxiety over significant delays in diagnostic testing, the Ministry of Health continues to face intense criticism for its perceived failure to take adequate measures to address the situation.

Amidst the ongoing measles outbreak in the Maldives, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali has evaded questions in the People's Majlis regarding reports that the country has run out of measles testing kits.

During Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, the Member of Parliament for the Vaikaradhoo constituency, Hussain Ziyad, raised a formal inquiry regarding the recent surge in measles cases. MP Ziyad noted that there is significant public concern that the unusual spread of the disease in the Maldives was caused by a shortage of diagnostic test kits. He requested clarification on the facts of the situation and asked the government to confirm whether the supply of testing kits had indeed been exhausted.

Instead of providing a direct answer to the member's inquiry, Geela stated that she had attended the session prepared to address specific questions submitted in advance. Declining to answer the additional questions posed by MP Ziyad, Geela concluded her remarks with a very brief statement.

I have come here today specifically to provide answers to your questions. Therefore, thank you very much, Honorable Speaker.

241 Committee Cannot Strip Former Presidents of Security: Ali Hussain

Legal expert Ali Hussain has asserted that the 241 Committee’s decision to withhold security for former presidents during protests is unconstitutional. He argued that a parliamentary committee lacks the authority to strip away protections guaranteed by specific legislation, noting that such changes can only be enacted through formal legal amendments passed by the full Parliament. Furthermore, Hussain suggested the move was a desperate attempt to shield the government from public embarrassment, warning that it would ultimately damage the administration's reputation.
