Implementation of Parliament-approved duty reductions on cigarettes begins
Following the ratification of amendments to the Maldives Export-Import Act, the specific duty on cigarettes, bidis, and heated tobacco products has been reduced to 4 MVR, while the ad valorem duty has been lowered to 30 percent. These changes have officially come into effect following the President's endorsement of the new legislation.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the 20th amendment to the Maldives Export-Import Act (Law No. 31/79).
This bill was passed by the People's Majlis during the 9th sitting of its second session for the year 2026, held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
Under the proposed legislation, the import duty on cigarettes, beedi, and heated tobacco products—including consumables designed to be used without combustion—has been set at MVR 4.00 per unit. Additionally, an ad valorem duty of 30% will be applied to these products.
Furthermore, it has been established that nicotine gum, nicotine patches, and other products specifically designed to aid in smoking cessation will be exempt from import duties.
Following the President's ratification and subsequent publication in the Government Gazette, this amendment has now officially come into effect.
