Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced that the second wide-body aircraft acquired to expand the operations of the national airline, Maldivian, will be brought into service within the coming year.
The Minister made these remarks while responding to a question from the Member for Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, during Tuesday's sitting of the People's Majlis.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister Ameen stated that acquiring wide-body aircraft to bolster the Maldives' tourism sector and launch long-haul operations is a key pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. The Minister further noted that efforts to secure a second aircraft are now nearing completion.
The Minister further noted that there are currently significant challenges in the global market regarding the acquisition of such large aircraft. However, despite these difficulties, the Minister assured that the government's ongoing efforts will enable the commencement of operations for a second wide-body aircraft within the coming year.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had previously announced that a second wide-body aircraft would be brought to the Maldives by October of last year. The President made these remarks while addressing the public during a ceremony held at Velana International Airport to inaugurate wide-body aircraft operations and the introduction of Airbus services.
However, the government later revised this timeline, stating that the second wide-body aircraft is now expected to arrive in the Maldives late this year.
