President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assured the public that the government’s top priority—providing housing for all citizens—is progressing without interruption. He pledged that major housing projects will be completed and handed over to the public by mid-2028. The President made these remarks during a press conference held at the President's Office on Monday morning.
The President stated that his administration will prioritize not just completing housing projects, but ensuring that flats are fully ready for occupancy—a level of commitment he noted was unseen in previous governments. He highlighted that all preparations have been finalized to commence physical work on housing projects across 13 islands awarded in late 2025, with financing arrangements secured and advance payments already processed. These initiatives include the Bank of Maldives (BML) housing finance projects in Hulhumale' and Villimale'. The President assured that foundation laying and concrete work for all but one of these projects will begin this coming July, with a target to fully complete all construction by mid-2028.
The President further stated that the affordable housing loan schemes introduced last year through the Bank of Maldives (BML) will continue throughout this year. He also noted that the government is working to expand the Housing Trust Fund and provide equity financing opportunities to facilitate easier home construction for the general public. The President added that in addition to seeking allocations from next year's budget to expand the fund, ongoing projects will continue using existing resources. He further emphasized that the government is working to secure accessible financing options through banks to support building construction.
Furthermore, the President stated that stalled projects across the atolls would be resumed and carried forward using alternative financial models. In this regard, he noted that the agreement to resume the stalled 400-housing unit project in Kulhudhuffushi and hand it over to a private contractor would be finalized this week. He also highlighted that the 2,000-housing unit project in the same city—the largest housing initiative in the atolls—is planned for completion within two and a half years.
Regarding the Rasmalé land reclamation project, the President stated that 60 percent of the work has been completed. He noted that stalled operations are set to resume, with the entire reclamation process expected to be finalized by late this year. Addressing the publication of housing lists, the President confirmed that a thorough verification process is underway before the final names are released. He assured that, unlike past practices, the current administration is conducting this process with transparency and through established procedures. The President further guaranteed that land plots and flats would be awarded to their rightful recipients without any outside influence.
The President stated that the government's objective is to deliver unprecedented results and provide a permanent solution to the housing crisis facing the public. President Muizzu further emphasized that these efforts are being conducted with full transparency and fairness, free from any political influence.
