Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, the Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumalé constituency, has stated that the government must stop giving citizens false hope as development projects across the country remain stalled.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "TV Talk" program, Shamheed stated that regardless of which island one visits today, the primary grievance raised by citizens is the suspension of ongoing development projects.
Shamheed noted that Members of Parliament are well aware that development projects in their respective islands have come to a standstill. He further highlighted that various members have repeatedly raised these concerns on the floor of the Parliament.
Shamheed noted that although 3 billion Rufiyaa was allocated in last year's budget specifically for housing projects, no practical work has been carried out.
Highlighting the details of development projects included in this year's budget for this sector, Shamheed stated that only five percent of the work has been completed so far. He further alleged that the administration is misleading the public by amending various laws regarding the pledges the President vowed to fulfill within this year during his Presidential Address.
Shamheed noted that although government ministers continue to announce completion dates and deadlines for various projects across different platforms, no actual work is being carried out on the ground. He stated that it is unacceptable to give the public false hope when it is clearly evident that these projects have come to a standstill.
It can be observed today that development projects have come to a standstill. Despite this, various ministers continue to take to podiums to discuss these initiatives and announce completion deadlines. It is time to stop giving the public such hollow hope.Dr. Ahmed Shamheed, Member of Parliament for the South Hulhumalé constituency.
Furthermore, Shamheed stated that the state budget is being squandered on numerous wasteful expenditures instead of being directed toward essential priorities. He also alleged that significant deceptions are being carried out in the utilization of public funds. Shamheed emphasized that the government should instead prioritize the swift implementation of development projects and the delivery of basic services required by the citizens.
