Minister Muththalib to be summoned to Majlis over absence of garbage chutes in FDC flats
Member of Parliament Mohamed Ibrahim has requested Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib to appear before the Parliament to clarify why garbage chutes were not installed at the "Amaan" flats in Hulhumale. The MP highlighted that residents are facing significant health and hygiene challenges as they are forced to use elevators for waste disposal. Despite the previous administration's original design including a garbage chute system, its absence upon the project's completion has sparked widespread public outcry.

A request has been submitted to summon Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib to Parliament regarding the failure to install garbage chutes in the "Amaan" flats. These housing units were developed in Hulhumalé Phase II by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) during the previous MDP administration.
The Member of Parliament for North Galolhu, Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), has submitted a request to summon the Minister to Parliament for questioning regarding this matter.
In the notice submitted by MP Mohamed Ibrahim, he sought clarification regarding the reasons behind the decision to exclude specialized garbage chutes from the 4,000 housing units constructed during the previous administration.
In his inquiry, the member highlighted that under current arrangements, household waste must be transported downstairs using elevators. He noted that this practice forces residents to carry trash bags in confined spaces alongside others, causing significant inconvenience. Furthermore, the member emphasized that this method is far from ideal when considering public health and hygiene standards.
The previous administration designed these flats to include a garbage chute system. During the initial media tour of the model apartments, the designated shafts for the installation of these chutes were clearly displayed to journalists. However, despite the current administration taking office and the significant delay before the flats were finally handed over to tenants, the garbage chutes have yet to be installed.
Residents of these flats report that the situation has led to an extreme escalation of the waste management crisis, causing them to face significant hardships.
