Pres. Muizzu is paving the way for an authoritarian grip on power due to a lack of public support: MP Didi
Maradhoo MP Ahmed Didi has expressed concern over the dismissal of technical staff from state-owned enterprises to make room for political appointees. He alleged that President Muizzu has lost public support due to unfulfilled promises and is now resorting to coercive constitutional amendments to maintain power and influence elections. Furthermore, the MP criticized the administration's authoritarian governance and its inability to increase state revenue, stating that such leadership is unacceptable.

Ahmed Didi, the Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency, has stated that the state is no longer functioning as a formal institution. He noted that, having lost public support, the current administration is increasingly resorting to authoritarian measures to maintain its grip on power.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Surukhee" program, MP Didi stated that the government has recruited numerous employees into State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to coincide with the elections, while simultaneously dismissing long-serving staff from those institutions.
He stated that these individuals include technical staff possessing the necessary expertise and professional competence.
MP Didi highlighted that the MDP has consistently maintained that a state cannot be governed in such a manner. He specifically questioned how an administration could function without the capacity to generate state revenue, especially as the number of jobs within State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) exceeds 30,000.
Furthermore, MP Didi stated that there is no longer a single citizen in the Maldives who believes President Muizzu can secure victory in the upcoming 2028 election. He attributed this sentiment to the President’s repeated pattern of dishonesty and his failure to fulfill any of the pledges he has made.
MP Didi noted that the public has already rejected the current administration in both the council elections and the referendum. He further stated that, having lost public support, the government is now seen to be paving the way for an authoritarian grip on power without the need for fair elections.
It is becoming increasingly evident that, due to a lack of public support, efforts are being made to secure power through authoritarian means rather than a fair election. Furthermore, it is anticipated that their grip on power will continue to tighten through increasingly coercive measures.Ahmed Didi, Member of Parliament for the Maradhoo constituency.
Furthermore, MP Didi stated that their grip on power is expected to tighten day by day, asserting that this is the underlying reason for the various amendments being made to the Constitution.
As the current administration continues to restructure civil service positions and recruit new employees, many are raising concerns over a perceived lack of administrative efficiency and governance.
