Boats urged to beware of drifting containers near Dhoonidhoo

Police have urged seafarers in the Male' area to exercise caution after several containers fell overboard from a Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) barge moored at the Male' Commercial Harbor's outer jetty and are now drifting at sea.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday night, June 27, 2026. Authorities confirmed that the matter was reported by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) at approximately 11:10 p.m. that evening.

Police have urged vessel captains and travelers to exercise extreme caution when navigating the waters between Dhoonidhoo and Feydhoofinolhu, as drifting containers are expected to be in the area. The police advise all seafarers to remain vigilant while traveling through this region, warning that these containers pose a significant hazard to maritime safety.

Relevant authorities are currently working to determine the cause of the incident and the exact number of containers that fell overboard.
