WAMCO: No complaints received despite prevalence of waste and wastewater leakage from garbage trucks onto public streets
Public frustration is mounting over the contamination of Malé’s streets caused by waste and foul-smelling runoff leaking from WAMCO collection trucks. Many residents have expressed serious concerns regarding the potential for disease outbreaks, particularly in areas near schools where the accumulation of such unsanitary liquid poses a significant public health risk.

Concerns are mounting over the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) garbage trucks leaking waste and contaminated water onto the streets of Malé, with the company failing to clean the affected areas.
The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) is responsible for collecting household waste in Malé City for a service fee. The corporation also manages the collection of waste from public bins placed across the city's streets. However, concerns have recently escalated regarding the waste collection process in certain areas of Malé. Issues include waste being scattered onto the streets and the spillage of contaminated water during the collection process.
Recently, many have expressed outrage after waste and sewage water were dumped on the street in front of Falah Preschool. Videos documenting the incident have since been widely circulated on social media.
Sources who spoke to RaajjeMV reported that Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) staff are being highly negligent during waste collection. They noted that when waste spills from bins onto the streets, it is often left uncleaned, and foul-smelling wastewater is frequently spilled and abandoned on the pavement. Residents expressed deep concern over these practices, particularly given the current surge in viral infections. They warned that such poor hygiene standards pose a significant public health risk and could further accelerate the spread of fevers and respiratory illnesses.
Noting a complete lack of regard for hygiene, they stated that since the area surrounding Falaah Pre-school is highly congested, a large number of children and parents are being forced to endure significant hardship due to this issue.
When contacted during Monday's "Fashaairu" program regarding the matter, WAMCO stated that they were unaware of any such complaints being filed to date.
WAMCO stated that should such incidents occur, they will investigate the matter and take necessary measures to resolve it.
