Land for Hoarafushi waste management center was allocated by council, yet government claims we are not cooperating; not a single practical step has been taken to fulfill President's campaign pledges so far: Waheed
Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Waheed has expressed concern that no practical work has commenced on the development of a modern waste management center, despite the council allocating the necessary land within three days to fulfill the President's pledge. Waheed refuted government claims that the project is stalled due to a lack of council cooperation, labeling such statements as false and noting that the council has already provided the required building and logistical support for WAMCO to begin operations. The council highlighted that all progress on the project has currently come to a standstill.

Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Waheed has stated that despite the council allocating land for a waste management center within three days of the request, the government claimed during the local council election campaign that the council was being uncooperative. Waheed further noted that no practical work has been initiated so far to fulfill President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledges for the island.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Haalu Kihineh" program, Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Waheed described the waste management site project as a long-standing, unfulfilled promise that has become a recurring saga. He noted that resolving the waste issue was a key campaign pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who had specifically committed to establishing and operationalizing a modern waste management center in Hoarafushi. Waheed stated that following the President's commitment, the council initiated the land acquisition process by sending formal requests to the relevant authorities on March 19, 2025. He further clarified that by March 22, 2025, the council had designated the necessary land and officially communicated the details to the respective ministries.
Even though the land was allocated within three days, claims made during the recent local council elections—suggesting that the project was stalled because the Hoarafushi Council failed to designate a site—are an absolute falsehood.
We have held numerous meetings with WAMCO, and their teams have visited the Hoarafushi Council on several occasions. WAMCO initially informed us that practical operations would commence in April of last year. However, despite our efforts, there has been no further communication since then. The Hoarafushi Council even designated a building to establish a WAMCO office and provided all the necessary assistance and cooperation required to launch their services.Mohamed Waheed, President of the Hoarafushi Island Council
Waheed stated that no official communication has taken place since then. He added that the current condition of the waste collection area remains unchanged, noting that no progress has been made in line with the President's pledge.
