Drugs worth MVR 1.8 million seized after being smuggled into Maldives by air
Maldives Customs Service has seized 941 grams of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of MVR 1.8 million, at Velana International Airport. The agency confirmed the seizure took place on May 24, noting a recent surge in drug trafficking via air routes that has led to multiple significant busts and subsequent handovers to the police for investigation over the past two months.

Maldives Customs Service has announced the seizure of 941 grams of narcotics attempted to be smuggled into the country by air on May 24, 2024.
Customs has confirmed that the seized substances were methamphetamine, which an individual attempted to smuggle into the Maldives through Velana International Airport.
The service further stated that the street value of the seized narcotics is estimated to be approximately 1.8 million Rufiyaa.
Maldives Customs Service continues to intercept significant quantities of narcotics being smuggled into the country via air travel on a regular basis.
In May, authorities seized over 21 kilograms of narcotics and handed three suspects over to the police. This follows previous operations in April, where Customs intercepted separate shipments of illicit drugs valued at MVR 1.7 million and MVR 3.3 million. Both Maldivian nationals and foreigners have been arrested in connection with these cases.
