Corrections officers' salaries increased ahead of council elections, two months after the promised deadline
Employees of the Maldives Correctional Service have submitted a petition to the President's Office expressing concern over the delay in promised salary increments, which were originally scheduled to take effect in January this year.

The salaries of Maldives Customs Service and Maldives Correctional Service employees have been increased, two months after the initially promised date.
The salary increments for the employees of both institutions are set to take effect starting from this March.
The budget for the current year includes provisions for salary increases for both institutions. The government had previously pledged to raise the pay for Corrections officers at the beginning of the year. However, after a period of delay, these salary increments have been implemented with less than a month remaining before the Local Council Elections.
In February, a large number of Maldives Correctional Service officers submitted a signed petition to the President's Office expressing their concern over the government's failure to implement a promised pay rise. The petition followed the government's earlier commitment to increase salaries starting in January. Despite assurances from Home Minister Ali Ihusan that the salary increments would be reflected in January's pay, the adjustment did not materialize. This discrepancy has led to growing frustration and ongoing complaints among correctional officers.
