Parliamentary committee approves appointment of former Ministers Thoriq and Adam Shareef as Ambassadors
The Parliament's Committee on Foreign Relations has unanimously approved the appointments of Adam Shareef Umar and Thoriq Ibrahim as the new Ambassadors to Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, respectively. Citing their extensive educational backgrounds and professional experience, the committee opted to grant approval without further interviews. Both appointees, who previously served as cabinet ministers, currently hold the position of Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Parliament's Committee on Foreign Relations has approved the appointments of former Minister of Local Government Adam Shareef Umar and former Minister of Environment Thoriq Ibrahim as ambassadors, following their resignations at the request of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
President Muizzu has nominated Adam Shareef for the position of Maldivian Ambassador to Qatar. Additionally, Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Thariq) has been nominated as the Maldivian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The nominations have been forwarded to the Parliament's Committee on Foreign Relations for further review.
During Monday’s committee meeting, Mohamed Dawood, the Member of Parliament for Kulhudhuffushi North, proposed granting approval to both nominees without further interviews, citing their distinguished educational backgrounds and extensive professional experience. The committee supported the motion, with all six members present voting unanimously to approve both individuals for their respective roles.
Thoriq and Adam Shareef resigned unexpectedly on April 14, 2026. Following their resignation, both individuals were appointed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at ministerial rank. While the government did not disclose the exact dates of their appointments, government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef confirmed on April 27, 2026, that both had been appointed to the post of Ambassador-at-Large at the Foreign Ministry.
