The People's Majlis secretariat has announced the cancellation of the parliamentary sitting originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, stating that the session will now be held on Monday instead.
The sitting scheduled to remove Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from his position as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis was cut short today, following his formal resignation prior to the proceedings.
A parliamentary sitting was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Sunday to decide on a motion to remove Ahmed Nazim from his position as Deputy Speaker. However, just 30 minutes before the session was set to begin, Nazim resigned from the post.
Presiding over Sunday's sitting, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla announced that the matter regarding the removal of Nazim from his post had been resolved. The Speaker noted that while the motion had been placed on the agenda, Nazim had formally resigned from the position in accordance with the Constitution.
After announcing the conclusion of the session as there was no further business on the agenda, Speaker Abdul Raheem stated that an additional sitting of the Parliament would be held this Sunday at 1:00 PM.
However, the Parliament Secretariat has now announced that the afternoon session will not take place. The Secretariat informed the media that the next sitting is scheduled for Monday, June 1. It is believed that the session initially scheduled for Sunday afternoon was intended for the election of a new Deputy Speaker to fill the current vacancy.
Although the first session of 2024 was scheduled to conclude on the 15th of this month, the term has been extended until the end of the month to complete several high-priority tasks.
