Highlighting attempts to restrict freedom of expression and control the media, Mauroof warned that citizens would take to the streets in protest if the government continues to infringe upon their fundamental rights. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu intends to appoint "bots" who will act solely according to his will across the Cabinet, the People's Majlis, and independent institutions, according to Mauroof Zakir, the Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s "Fala Suruhee" program, Mauroof severely criticized the government's policies.
Mauroof stated that President Muizzu intends to completely eliminate political opposition and freedom of expression. He further alleged that the government is working to suppress the general public by amending laws to criminalize and penalize the expression of opinions.
Furthermore, Mauroof highlighted that the current administration has failed to address the concerns of journalists. He characterized the proposed bill to control the media as a law designed to "decapitate" the press.
Reflecting on the current administration's governance, Mauroof stated that ministries are being managed in a highly authoritarian manner, dictated solely by the President's immediate whims. Describing President Muizzu as an uncompromising and "stubborn" individual, Mauroof remarked that a leader who truly cares for the nation would seek to rectify these issues; however, he noted that this is not what is currently being observed.
President Muizzu must realize that he cannot continue to govern ministries with such authoritarianism, acting solely on his personal whims. He cannot perpetually trample upon the rights of the Maldivian people. The citizens of Maldives will take to the streets.Mauroof Zakir, Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency.
Mauroof stated that President Muizzu must realize that a government cannot remain in power indefinitely by infringing upon the rights of its citizens. He further asserted that the Maldivian people will take to the streets to reclaim their rights and will exhaust every possible effort to bring about a change in administration.
Furthermore, Mauroof noted that many members of the ruling party are currently dissatisfied with the government. The Member of Parliament for the Kendhoo constituency, Mauroof Zakir, added that it is highly likely these members will join efforts to "size up" President Muizzu when the time is right.
